If you were to paint your home a shocking pink with fluorescent green trim, chances are it would be the most noticeable dwelling on the block. That is, unless you live in the town of Tlacotalpan, where such vibrant coloured homes are the norm. Ditto for the shops and public buildings.
“This is the most colourful city in Mexico,” says guide Enrique Sanchez Bello. “At the start of 20th century, the people started painting their houses and it became a kind of tradition.” In fact, it’s the grey, white or beige structures that look out of place here.
In the attractive main square, the 19th century Church of St. Christopher is purple and white, the Town Hall Municipal Palace is green and red, and the Chapel of the Virgin of Candlemass on the opposite side is orange.
Another distinguishing feature can be found on the side streets where century-old homes are graced with numerous arches, providing shade from the sun where neighbours can sit and chat.
The colonnaded houses, in a profusion of styles and colours, have helped make Tlacotalpan a UNESCO world heritage site, a designation it received in 1998. The UN organization says the town has “preserved its original urban fabric to a remarkable degree,” and that the layout and architecture represent a fusion of Spanish and Caribbean traditions of exceptional importance and quality.Source:travel.canoe.ca
